The Kelpie

by Rosslyn Elliot

Second Place, 2014

Stabled horse, soft nickering
Hidden from mortal knowing.
Dampness in mane atrickling
Where, oh where are you going?

Leap of my heart pattering,
Legs on your sides, warm breathing-
Fly with hooves spark-battering!
Across the hills we’re leaving.

Fingers in mane entwisted
Thunder of heaven pounding
To the sands of a shore enmisted
The clap of cliff wave sounding.

Down, down beyond recov’ry
Through waters deep we’re falling.
To blue and dim discov’ry
The horses of Lir are calling.
